June is National Foster a Pet Month

Among other things, June is recognized as National Foster a Pet Month. The goal is to encourage individuals and families to open their homes to shelter pets temporarily.

This month-long observance aims to highlight the absolutely critical role foster care plays in easing overcrowding in shelters and helping animals find their forever families.

Benefits of fostering:

You’re providing a safe and loving home for animals in need, which allows them to decompress from the stressful shelter environment, and lets their real personalities shine which increases their chances of adoption.

Some pets have manageable behavior challenges that require some time and the right environment to work through in order to be adopted, and that can be achieved by patient fostering.

Fostering supports rescue organizations and animal shelters by easing the burden of caring for a large number of animals, and creates space for more animals to be taken in.

Pets of all ages and pets with special medical needs benefit from living in a quiet environment where they can heal. Fostering provides animals with a second chance, helping them heal, grow, and find love.

Fosters play an important role in learning about a pet’s personality and matching them with an appropriate forever home.

Fostering can be on your terms, too. Short-term weekend fosters, vacation fosters, or longer term fosters are all options.

So contact your local rescue of choice and see how you can contribute to their mission. With an estimated 5.8 million cats and dogs entering shelters and rescues, they could really use your help.
